VIJAYAWADA: Continuing the wordy duel with its Left ally over allocation of development grants under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), city unit secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) R. Raghu on Tuesday hit out at the CPI for its failure to comprehend the "dangerous consequences" of the scheme. "It is unfortunate that the CPI leaders are unable to see through the World Bank conditions that are being thrust on us along with the funds," he said pointing out that the action plan had not been placed in the council meeting either. Mr. Raghu said the CPI was going the TDP way. Referring to the CPI leaders' claim that they would fight if the Centre laid conditions while extending the grants, he said it was ridiculous and far from practicality. "By toeing the Congress line on the issue, the CPI is sending wrong signals that implementation of the harmful WB game plan can be a cakewalk in Vijayawada, a place known as a Communist bastion," he observed. Reminding that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation was to get development grants to the tune of Rs. 80 crores from the State Government, he pointed to the steady decrease in allocation of funds to the civic bodies. Unfortunately, such "anti-people decisions of the Government" were not being met with enough resistance, he lamented.
