Congress failed to tackle unemployment: Opposition

Special Correspondent

Need for implementing uniform job policy stressed

Pondicherry: Political parties in most of the constituencies have intensified poll campaign in Pondicherry.

Parties opposed to the ruling Congress however criticise through their poll manifestos the Congress government for its `failure to tackle unemployment problem.'

Their functionaries also state in the course of their door-to-door campaign that the partiality of sanction of jobs for the youth of some particular segments alone with excessive care was causing havoc to the youth in other pockets. There should be no opportunity for this to repeat in the future, the opposition parties tell voters.

With more than an estimated 1.2 lakh unemployed youths waiting for jobs through Employment Exchange a uniform job policy was necessary, parties challenging the Democratic Progressive Alliance point out.

The ruling Congress contesting in 16 seats is yet to come out with the election manifesto.

JIPMER status

The system of posting youth to appease the unemployed in government departments under what is called NMR system (daily wage paid staff) had been adopted for several years. Another issue that would be hogging the limelight in Pondicherry is the one relating to the need to ensure protection of present status of JIPMER. There has been sustained campaign against the Centre by government employees` associations and some political parties for its move to convert JIPMER into an autonomous institution. JIPMER is now under direct administrative control of Director General of Health Services New Delhi. The poor patients and also students seeking admission to the college would be hit if there is change in administration of JIPMER, the antagonists of conversion state. Further a non-political organisation, Karaikal Struggle Group has been formed by a section of local citizens there to bring to focus the neglect Karaikal was suffering at the hands of all parties that had formed the government so far here. No proper developmental programmes for Karaikal had been evolved so far, the president of the Struggle Group

Of the six Assembly seats in Karaikal the DMK has two representatives while Congress holds the remaining four in the outgoing Assembly.
