Turup Gulaan
If the deft usage of the local dialect of Neyyatinkara, Poovar and Parassala was one of the main reasons for the success of `Raja Manikkayam,' starring Mammootty, it is the dance performance of this actor that adds colour to `Turup Gulaan.' Director Johnny Anthony has adopted a novel technique to market the film by projecting it as a comedy of Mammootty. Humourous dialogues written by Udai Krishna and Sibi K.Thomas and the mannerisms of Mammootty, who play the lead role, are the main attractions of the film. The director has narrated the story without losing its punch. The hero of the film has a disturbed childhood. He accidentally injures a person grievously and escapes from his native town in Kochi. He later appears as the owner of a wayside eatery near a popular hotel in Kozhikode. The hotel owners who are eyeing the piece of land where the eatery stands, tries to appropriate it and the hero, who is known for his belligerence, opposes it. He also lends a helping hand to Lekshmi (Sneha), who is the target of the evil designs of the family of Sridharan Unnithan (Kalashala Babu). They trap her father by sending him into jail on false charges in Singapore. The family also aims at taking away the hotel Lekshmi's father owns in India. Lekshmi has come to India to regain her father's property from the clutches of Chandrasekhara Menon.
Confident enough
Mammooty seems to be more confident in choosing glamorous roles and this was obvious in almost all the films released recently. He seems to be resolved in doing comic roles after his notable performance in `Azhakiya Ravanan' which came 11 years ago. His commendable performance justifies his decision. The role in `Turup Gulaan evokes laughter in the theatres. The dance numbers too have been presented very well. Audience goes berserk each time when he rocks and rolls on catchy tunes set by Alex Paul. Sneha, who made her debut through `Ingane Oru Nilapakshi' in Malayalam, has succeeded in winning the applause of the audience. Kalashala Babu's performance also is equally noteworthy. Salim Kumar after doing the lead role in 'Achan Urangatha Veedu' has come back doing a good comedy role. Venjarmood Suraj is emerging as a good comedian. Innocent, as the father of the hero; Devan, as the wronged but spirited father staying in Singapore; and Suresh Krishna as the wily character, have all done justice to their roles.
