The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), which includes the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Congress, appears to have found an easy way of non-participation in discussions in the City Corporation's council meetings. On Monday, the seven UDF members in the 55-member council staged a walkout after they knew that they would be forced to take part in a debate on the murder of the Chavakkad Municipal Chairman. So, they decided to move an urgent resolution demanding the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to seek fresh mandate citing a court verdict opposing the declaration of the city as litter-free. Mayor M. Bhaskaran summarily rejected the resolution stating that a notice in this regard had to be given at least two hours prior to the meeting. At this the UDF members staged a walkout. More than a month ago, one of the UDF members brought in a resolution at the eleventh hour, which led to a similar situation. Last year all the UDF members had staged a walkout on the same issue.
