KOLLAM: Communist Party of India (CPI) national secretary Sudhakar Reddy, MP, has warned the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre of serious consequences if it violates the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). At a Meet-the Press programme here on Tuesday, he said the Left parties were committed to supporting the UPA Government only if the CMP was implemented. The support to the UPA at the Centre and the appeal to vote against the Congress in Kerala and West Bengal may sound incongruous, but it was inevitable in the Indian political scenario, Mr. Reddy said. The Left parties were not making their support to the UPA an election issue in Kerala and West Bengal because the people of the two States would understand the situation, he said. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Sangh Parivar had not yet reconciled to the defeat they suffered in 1994. He said the purpose of the Rath Yatra of BJP leader L.K. Advani was to convey the BJP's commitment to Hindutva. The yatra was creating communal tension, Mr. Reddy alleged. He said the CPI was happy with the Supreme Court judgment on the Narmada Dam dispute. Nearly 38,000 families had been affected as a result of the dispute. The relief given to them was inadequate. Mr. Reddy expressed hope that the verdict would help in proper rehabilitation.
