Crime rate goes up in Hubli-Dharwad

Excise goods valued at over Rs. 40 lakh seized in 2005


HUBLI: The crime rate has gone up in the twin cities.

According to the official list of cases registered and solved, released by the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate, the twin cities had registered increase in the number of burglaries.

Burglary cases

While 101 burglary cases were reported during 2004, the number increased to 233 in 2005. It had already reached 32 in the first four months of 2006. Similarly under the category of other thefts, 225 cases were reported in 2004. It went up to 253 in 2005.

A total of 87 cases were reported in the first quarter of 2006.

Rioting

Cases of rioting had increased from 67 in 2004 to 73 in 2005.

While cases of chain snatching increased from 16 to 25, vehicle thefts had gone up from 106 in 2004 to 143 in 2005.

Already 29 cases of vehicle thefts were reported in the first quarter of 2006.

Marginal decrease

However, there was a marginal decrease in the number of assault cases registered. The number of cases went down from 201 in 2004 to 193 in 2005.

There was also a decline in the number of fatal accidents from 92 to 80.

Cheating cases

The number of cheating cases also declined from 143 to 61. Murder cases and attempt to murder cases had also come down.

The number of cases registered under the Motor Vehicle Act has also came down from 59,482 cases in 2004 to 49,008 cases in 2005.

The commissionerate has unearthed 148 cases of illicit liquor during 2005 and seized excise goods worth Rs. 40,82,480.

Increase in sale

The commissioner has claimed that because of the stringent measures initiated by the police in curbing illicit liquor trade, the Karnataka Beverages Corporation, Hubli, had registered an increase in sales of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and also beer.

IMFL

While the sales of IMFL almost doubled (from Rs. 2.95 crore during 2004-05 to Rs. 5.65 crore during 2005-06) that of beer increased from Rs. 1.53 crore to Rs. 2.29 crore, the commissioner said.

Gambling

He also said that owing to the police action against gambling, single digit lottery and duplicate lottery, the sale of Karnataka State Lottery tickets had increased four fold.
