THRISSUR: All India secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML) K.N. Ramachandran has appealed to the Election Commission to approach the Supreme Court against the decision of the High Court granting permission to the State Government to sign the Smart City deal.
Election issue
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Ramachandran protested against the High Court order and alleged that the order was against the model code of conduct of the Election Commission, as this was one of the major election issues. He said his party would make all out efforts to ensure that the State Government would not be able to sign the deal with the Dubai Internet City. Mr. Ramachandran said through this deal nearly 136 acres of prime land in Kochi would be handed over to the DIC for a paltry sum while its actual price would be about Rs.700 crores. "High-scale corruption is involved in this," he alleged.
Narmada struggle
He said the decision of the Prime Minister to continue the construction for increasing the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam was a surrender before the Gujarat Chief Minister and the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Narendra Modi. This only went to prove that both the Congress and the BJP had the same "development perspective" which was pro-rich and subservient to the global capital. "In fact, many of the recent developments indicate that both the Congress and the BJP have the same policies on many crucial issues like the Iran's nuclear programme, Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, U.S. policy on West Asia and on globalisation as a whole." By continuing the support to such a Congress-led Government, the Left is also appearing to be accepting the pro-U.S. imperialist consensus arrived at between the Congress and the BJP, Mr Ramachandran alleged. Referring to the recent joint statement of the intellectuals in Kerala lending support to the LDF in the Assembly elections, Mr. Ramachandran said this only went to prove that these intellectuals also had been trapped in the "unreal" UDF-LDF divide in the State.
