Corrections and clarifications

  • In The Hindu-CNN-IBN projected poll results for Tamil Nadu ("The dead heat and what could alter it", April 14, 2006), the table headlined "Men prefer DMK, women vote more for Jayalalithaa", had the figure for AIADMK+ (women voters) as 51%. It is 50%.

  • In the "Methodology" box in the article "The substantially fragmented vote in Assam" (The Hindu-CNN-IBN projected poll results for Assam, April 11, 2006), the word "not" was omitted from a sentence. It should read: "In these [constituencies], a pre-poll survey was not conducted due to operational difficulties."

  • A sentence in "Brewing discontent in the high ranges" ("Assembly Elections 2006", April 18, 2006) has brought in protests from women readers. "And some places are named after renowned prostitutes of yore", they say, is gender insensitive and has upset women residents.

  • A reader spotted the line "China to start talks in 2007 on joining World Trade Organisation" (under the subheading "Protectionism") in the graphic (Graphic News) titled "U.S.-China trade gap" ("International", April 15, 2006). It is incorrect, he says. According to the WTO website, China has been a member of WTO since December 11, 2001. The reference must be to China notifying WTO of its government subsidies and saying that it will start negotiations by the end of 2007 on joining a WTO treaty that limits the ability of a nation to discriminate against foreigners in government contracts.

  • A reader says that in "A nostalgic trip for Anand Sharma" (Delhi, "From the States", April 11, 2006, page 5), it is incorrect to say Mr. Sharma, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, "is the Rajya Sabha MP from Shimla ... " Rajya Sabha MPs represent the State and not particular constituencies, he says. Anand Sharma is the Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh.

  • In "Kerala student leader remanded to custody" ("From the South", April 2, 2006), the sentence said, "The police had issued arrest warrants ..." The report was about an SFI leader, against whom there are nine pending arrest warrants, being remanded to judicial custody. A reader wanted to know whether a police officer can issue an arrest warrant against anyone. The police do not have the powers to issue warrant of arrest but move a judicial magistrate for a warrant. The magistrate, if satisfied, issues the arrest warrant. The same procedure is followed by the police vis-a-vis the executive magistrate in cases where there is likelihood of imminent breach of peace. The police have suo motu powers to arrest a person in certain circumstances even without a warrant of arrest.
