Correspondent

Extremists' strength dwindles in the agency, says outgoing SP Naveen Chand

  • All the surrendered naxalites provided rehabilitation
  • Counselling of parents and village elders pays dividends
  • Relations between the police and public improved
  • Proposals sent for setting up 16 police stations in the district

Kakinada: "Making 20 naxalites, including ten leaders such as commanders and deputy commanders of dalams surrender is the biggest achievement during my tenure for the past two years," claimed East Godavari Superintendent of Police Vemuganti Naveen Chand here on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference on the eve of his transfer to Hyderabad as Deputy Director of Andhra Pradesh Police Academy, he said counselling of parents and village elders had yielded dividends with many naxalites choosing to desert the dalams and join the mainstream.

He said all the surrendered naxalites were provided rehabilitation enabling them to lead a peaceful life.

Claiming that the extremists' strength has dwindled in the agency due to surrendering of important cadre coupled with effective policing, Naveen Chand said the strength would further comedown in the coming days.

    `Good experience'

He said it was a good experience for any one, especially for the police to work in East Godavari, which has largest number of assembly seats and higher density of population.

Except on two occasions, he said he did not confront any sensitive situation which also could have been tackled with ease by convincing people.

Explaining about his achievements, he cited how relation between the police and public were improved giving no room for complaints and how efforts were made to enforce the traffic regulations educating the public developing a traffic park.

    Welfare of police

Even in looking after the welfare of police personnel, he said, he took a lead by organising several medical camps enlisting the support of local doctors. Mr. Naveen Chand said that the problem of pseudo naxals menace was tackled and even criminal gangs responsible for thefts and chain snatching were identified. He hoped that the police would nab these gangs with the help of available clues very soon. He said proposals were submitted for starting of setting up 16 new police stations of which seven would be in Konaseema alone.
