CHENNAI: The sixth inter-city Parle Champions U-17 cricket tournament will be held here from April 20 to 25. This is the first time the city is hosting the event. The schools taking part in the limited overs competition are Salwan Boy's, New Delhi, St. Patrick's School, Chennai, Wesley Junior College, Hyderabad, (all in Group `A') and DAV HS, Chandigarh, Presidency School, Bangalore, Rizvi Springfield School, Mumbai, (all in Group `B'). Tournament director P.N. Sankaran thanked the Parle group for supporting the event, during a press conference at the TNCA Club on Monday. "The tournament has thrown up some good talent. Robin Uthappa was adjudged `Man of the Series' in one of the previous editions and today he plays for India," he said.
Bounty for the best
According to Sankaran, 20 cricketers will be selected from the competition for a six-day intensive coaching programme under the guidance of former India cricketers Maninder Singh, V.B. Chandrasekar and Surinder Khanna. The five best cricketers (batsman, bowler, fielder, all-rounder and wicket-keeper) selected from the batch will be awarded Rs. 20,000 and a kit bag each. The matches of the TNCA-organised event will be played at the SRMC, SPIC-YMCA and SICAL-Vivekananda grounds. TNCA secretary C.R. Vijayaraghavan revealed that the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium could not be made available because of some ongoing work. TNCA treasurer S. Ganesan and joint secretary S.E. Sankar Rao were also present at the press conference.
