Chemplast Sanmar to meet Pistons

Sports Reporter

CHENNAI: Chemplast Sanmar and India Pistons will contest the final of The Hindu trophy to be played under lights at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. In Tuesday's semifinals, Sanmar defeated India Cements `A' by five wickets, while Pistons beat Indian Bank by 25 runs.

Inserted on a wicket that was a tad damp courtesy showers the previous day, India Cements `A' managed just 130 for eight from its allotted 30 overs. Medium-pacer A. Avinash took four for 30, while Sunil Oasis top-scored for Cements with 31.

Sanmar chased down the target with five overs to spare after R. Satish, who had earlier claimed two wickets, stitched together partnerships of 50 and 52 for the fourth and fifth wickets. First with V. Subramania Siva and then S. Vasanth Saravanan, Satish (48 n.o., 42b, 5 x 4) ensured the early wickets Sanmar lost didn't cost it dear.

In the second semifinal, Pistons opting to bat, ground its way to 72 for two in fifteen overs before left-hander Suresh Babu smashed a 44-ball 71 (7 x 4, 2 x 6). The last 15 overs realised 137 runs as the small-made Babu dabbed to third-man and lofted over long-on with skill. He put on 56 for the fourth wicket with B. Dhandapani who made a fine 69 (70b, 4 x 4).

Pistons then took regular wickets as Indian Bank was dismissed for 184. Opener P. Satish scored 47 (37b, 5x4), but the knock of the innings was R.G. Shyam Sundaar's 66 off 54 balls. One of the three sixes he hit went into the billboard on the stadium's roof. For Pistons, off-spinner M. A. Satish Kumar scalped four and Babu took three with his left-arm spin.

The scores: India Cements `A' 130 for eight in 30 overs (A. Avinash four for 30) lost to Chemplast Sanmar 133 for five in 25 overs (R. Satish 48 n.o.).

India Pistons 209 for six in 30 overs (B. Dhandapani 69, Suresh Babu 71 n.o.) bt Indian Bank 184 in 28.5 overs (P. Satish 47, R.G. Shyam Sundaar 66, M.A. Satish Kumar four for 47).
