KOZHIKODE: With summer reaching its peak, water shortage is also on the rise. For nearly four days before Vishu, water supply to the Malaparamba Housing Colony was disrupted. The 400 houses in the colony had to source water from private tankers to celebrate the festival of prosperity. Water supply was restored only on Monday afternoon. KWA authorities said that the Punoor river had dried up due to stoppage in supply from the Peruvannammozhi dam. The Irrigation Department restored the supply by Monday, they added. M. Jayadeep, secretary, Malaparamba Housing Colony Allottees \ Residents Association said that though this was the first time that water supply was stopped due to drying up of the Punoor, supply was disrupted more than eight times this year alone due to pipe lines burst, he said. But the situation is likely to change in a week. The city will get 18 million litres per day (mld) more when water will be pumped from the Kuttikattoor pump house of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) under the Phase II of the Kozhikode Water Supply Interior Augmentation Scheme. KWA sources said that this supply would cater to places like Nadakkavu, West Hill, East Hill, Mankavu and Kallayi areas of the city, sources said. The source of the water is the Chaliyar. The city's water requirement is 110 mld and the KWA is supplying 54 mld. Now, water is being sourced from two sources - Chaliyar and Punoor rivers - and supplied from four storage facilities at Koovur, Malaparambu, Pottamal and Balamandir. The KWA supplies water on alternate days in the city.
