Tatkal scheme revised

CHENNAI: The Union Railway Ministry has revised the "tatkal" scheme with immediate effect.

The existing advance reservation period of three days under the scheme is now increased to five days, excluding the date of journey and it is being extended to more trains with Internet and e-ticketing facility as well.

Since auto-upgradation is done for general confirmed tickets and tatkal confirmed tickets alternately, there is a higher possibility of auto-upgradation for those passengers who are having confirmed tickets under the scheme.

Under the revised scheme, waitlisted tickets are also issued to the extent of tatkal quota, says a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Colleges not to surrender seats

CHENNAI: The All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association (AIMECA) have claimed that colleges would not surrender any of their seats to the government quota. He said as per the seven-Judge Bench judgment of the Supreme Court in August 2005, the Government had no power to carve out any quota from the unaided colleges. As per the judgment no authority could dictate terms on the unaided institutions in respect of admissions.

Stating that the so-called move to surrender seats went against this decision, the AIMECA in a statement claimed that its members had decided not to surrender "even a single seat' to the government this year. The member colleges would fill their seats on their own.

Also when this was the position, the Justice S.S. Subramani committee (for conducting entrance examination to management quota seats) had no role to play, it said. — Special Correspondent
