Staff Reporter

Family opposes `love marriage'

KURNOOL: An undergraduate student, Manju, is torn between her parents and her father's subordinate in the Army, whom she reportedly loved and married. Ms. Manju approached the police on Tuesday seeking protection from her father, who is Subedar in the Armed Forces. He reportedly arrived here to take her back.

According to reports, Mallikarjuna of Peapuly in Kurnool district, a lance naik in the Armed Forces eloped with his superior officer's daughter from Nasik on March 1. They reportedly married at Balaji temple in Hyderabad and later got their marriage registered at Kurnool.

They returned to Nasik but Manju's parents refused to honour the marriage, which resulted in their running away for the second time.

Husband missing

After leaving Manju in the custody of his parents, Mallikarjuna reported for duty on April 9 and sought permission from the officers to set up a family. But there had been no message from him since then. Mr. Mallikarjuna's colleagues said that he was taken into custody by the guards in the Armed Forces after her father lodged a complaint with the Commanding Officer. After learning that her father and three others were on the lookout for her, she approached the police. Deputy SP Ammi Reddy said since both were majors and married as per the law they would be given support. An attempt would be made to resolve the dispute through counselling, he said.
