KURNOOL: The cult of violence is invariably linked to backwardness of people in Rayalaseema region, P. Ranga Reddy, professor of Economics at S.V. University, Tirupati, has said. Prof Reddy who has been bringing out books on various dimensions of life, culture and social conditions in Rayalaseema, said it was easy to instigate violence in a backward region like Rayalaseema but peace was difficult. He said any effort for development should begin with promotion of peace. As the violence was the rule of law, any development work was opposed tooth and nail by selfish elements, who were nothing but anti-development forces. Prof. Reddy said the police and civil administration had miserably failed to check the anti-development forces and perpetrators of violence. Since the anti-development forces had entered the corridors of power through politics, only a movement for peace would help make a beginning for development.
Scarce commodity
He said peace was a scarce commodity in Rayalaseema and those who worked for it would have people's backing. In the absence of basic human rights, people had no access to education, health and fruits of development. The regions more backward than Rayalaseema had overcome the shortcomings and ushered in prosperity while Rayalaseema was groping in the dark.
