Karan takes shot put gold

Hyderabad: Karan Singh heaved the shot to a distance of 14.80 metres to claim the gold medal in the Southern Command athletic championships here on Tuesday.

The results: Shot put: 1. Karan Singh (ATNK and K) 14.80m, 2. Ramesh Kumar (31 ARMD), 3. Praveen Kumar (ATNK and K). Long jump: 1. Alex Thomas (ATNK and K) 6.84m, 2. Ravi (ATNK and K), 3. Basil (54 Inf). 5000m: 1. Shanavas (ATNK and K) 15m, 26.91s, 2. A. Mallesh (ATNK and K), 3. Ghodekar (MG and G). 20km walk: 1. Ajay Kumar (ATNK and K) 1hr, 14m, 19.0s, 2. Mahendra Gupta (ATNK and K), 3. Paramjit Singh (MG and G).

Hat-trick by Khizer

Md.Khizer's hat-trick helped State Bank of Hyderabad thrash Mysaram Stars 7-1 in the senior division Rahim league football championship on Tuesday. Md Khizer scored the first three goals for the bankmen in the 16th, 18th and 35 minutes to make it 3-0 at half time.

In the second half, Mysaram got its first goal through Hussain five minutes after resumption. But thereafter the SBH team began is scoring spree again and Fareed (2), Khaja Moinuddin and Prakash completed the tally.

Felicitation for OU medallists

The Osmania University will organise a felicitation function for the university's sportspersons who won medals in All India inter-university meets during the year 2005-2006.

All such medallists from the varsity should report at the College of Technology, Osmania university campus, at 5 p.m. on Friday (April 21).

RRDHA selection trials

The Ranga Reddy District Hockey Association will conduct selection trials for girls at Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, Uppal , on April 19 and 20. Those selected will take part in the sub-junior inter district meet to be held at Vedurukuppam near Tirupathi, from Aril 27 to May 1.

Only players born on or after Jan 1, 1990 may attend the selections along with proof of age. Further details may be obtained from K. Manoranjan at the venue or on phone 9866428052.

Inter-district basketball

The Andhra Pradesh inter-district junior basketball championships for boys and girls under 18 years will be held at the District Sports Authority (DSA) grounds, Kakinada from May 18 to 21.

Also, the AP State teams will take part in the junior National championships at Ludhiana, Punjab from May 27 to June 3. Selection trials to pick the state teams will be held at the YMCA, Secunderabad on May 5 and 6. A coaching camp for the probables will commence on May 7.

Registered players of affiliated district associations may attend the trials. They should report to G.M. Sampath Kumar, General Secretary, APBA at the trials venue with their age certificates duly attested by heads of their educational institutions and also by secretaries of their respective district basketball associations.

Mini inter-district volleyball

The Andhra Pradesh mini inter-District volleyball championships and selection trials for boys and girls will be held at the Hyderabad from April 27 to 29. The teams that will be picked at the above meet will represent the State in the mini National championships at Bangalore from May 9 to 14.

The annual inter-District beach volleyball championships for men will be held at the newly laid court at Necklace Road, Hyderabad from May 9 at 5 p.m. Teams will be picked at the above meet for the National championships at Chennai from May 19 to 21.
