Mundy, Vinod Kumar share lead

CHANDIGARH: Uttam Singh Mundy and Vinod Kumar carded five-under 67 to share the lead on the first day of the Hero Golf Chandigarh Open at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here on Tuesday.

Vinod Kumar continued with his good form after finishing second in the SRF all-India matchplay championship in New Delhi last week. On the front nine Vinod sunk four birdies before bogeys came calling on the back nine. Vinod, however, recovered through fine putting and good iron-play.

Mundy charted a somewhat different path than Vinod. He was four-under for the first seven holes, but a bogey on the par-3 eighth brought him down. The 36-year-old resurrected his round with consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, the last one with a 14-feet effort. He saved one more stroke on the penultimate hole to be five-under for the day.

"I could have finished well but after this round I am not complaining. Both my bogeys came from the sand bunkers. I could not guess the strength of the shot and my clubs stuck in the sand," said Mundy.

One stroke behind the duo was a pack of five players, Rafick Ali, Mukesh Kumar, Rohit Chaudhary, Binod Pandey and Arjun Singh. One more rung below was a quartet of Ranjit Singh, C. Muniyappa, Jaiveer Virk and Pappan. Defending champion Harinder Gupta played a level-par round to be tied for the 25th position.

The scores: Uttam Singh Mundy and Vinod Kumar 67; Binod Pandey, Rohit Chaudhary, Arjun Singh, Feroz Ali and Mukesh Kumar 68; Ranjit Singh, C Muniyappa, Jaiveer Virk and Pappan 69; A.S. Lehal, Shamim Khan, Amardip Malik, Mohammed Salim, Vishal Singh and Rafick Ali 70. Amateurs: Gaganjeet Bhullar 72; H.S. Kang 74.
