Documentary focusses on development of capital city

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is estimated that over 10,000 IT professionals and more than 85 companies operate from the city. The number of IT professionals is slated to increase to 25,000 by 2007 and up to 50,000 by 2010.

However, despite these looming realities, the development of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has been stalled for years. The city is yet to have direct air connectivity to the United States or Europe, or even to some of the major IT centres like Hyderabad and Kolkata.

These issues were highlighted as part of a 15-minute documentary titled `Trivandrum-A New Saga of Development,' made by the Trivandrum Development Front, an organisation comprising software professionals and consultants who aim to promote the district as an investment destination. The documentary was screened here at the Press Club hall on Tuesday. Some of the other development issues highlighted include widening and developing the Kazhakuttam-Kovalam stretch of the NH-47 bypass, setting up of a transhipment hub at Vizhinjam, and of special economic zones.

It was suggested that the NH-47 bypass should be upgraded to a six-lane stretch, landscaped and provided with modern roadside lighting, traffic signals, roundabouts, signs and high mast lights. The documentary called for sustained efforts by the Government to transform Vizhinjam into a transhipment hub. The project has potential to create around 1 lakh indirect job opportunities, which will be a boon to the youth of Kerala and will drastically bring down unemployment, the documentary said. It was recommended that the city should be connected to the North-South Corridor of the National Highway network under the project for connectivity of State capitals.

The documentary also observed that Thiruvananthapuram was the ideal place to set up bio-technology park for industries owing to the presence of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Bio-Technology and Sri Chitra Tirunal Centre for Bio-Technology.
