Congress MLAs rally behind Marwah

Jangpura MLA sits on a hunger strike against the ongoing sealing drive

NEW DELHI: Putting behind their differences, Congress MLAs from various sections came out in support of the hunger strike undertaken by Jangpura MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah in his constituency here on Tuesday. The MLAs demanded that the ongoing sealing of commercial premises in the Capital's residential areas be stopped immediately and amendments made into the law to provide relief to the people.

Interestingly, dissident Congress MLAs Bhisham Sharma and Surinder Kumar made it very clear that they were there to support their friend Mr. Marwah and nothing more should be read into their presence. In addition to the dissident MLAs, loyalist legislators were also present in full strength taking the tally of those who joined the hunger strike to around two-dozen legislators.

Mr. Sharma said he still maintained that Ms. Dikshit had failed to take up the cause of lakhs of affected families in an effective manner. "I make it very clear that I have not joined the Chief Minister's camp. I am here to support my friend of 20 years who has taken up the cause of the people," he added.

Former DPCC president Subhash Chopra, who has been instrumental in leading the relay hunger strike, was also present.

Mr. Marwah said the present exercise of sealing of commercial units in residential areas had caused immense harm to the people of Delhi and this should be stopped immediately.

Contending that the poor and middle class had been badly affected by the sealing drive, Mr. Marwah urged the Union Government to make necessary changes in the law to ensure that people do not lose their livelihood.

Stressing that everybody should rise above factionalism in the party and work to protect the interests of the common man, Mr. Marwah said both the Centre and the Delhi Government should work in a coordinated manner to give relief to the people who were badly affected by the sealing of their properties.
