GUNTUR: The loss estimated by the Department of Agriculture due to a day's unexpected rain on Sunday night in Guntur district has been put at 6,100 hectares for both maize and paddy put together. A survey conducted by the department in 11 worst-affected mandals has put maize as the worst affected, but the percentage of loss has been put at 50 per cent of the crop. The production loss in case of paddy was estimated at 23.5 metric tonnes, while that for maize has not been calculated. In monetary terms the loss for Rabi crop of paddy has been put at Rs.1.41 lakhs, while for maize it was yet to be enumerated, Joint Director of Agriculture P. Ajith Kumar said on Tuesday. The loss for harvested chillies has not yet been estimated. While 94 hectares of paddy got affected, maize in 6,036 hectares was damaged. The affected mandals for maize were 206 hectares in Tenali, 20 hc. in Tadepalli, 1,080 hc. in Vemuru, 1,760 hc. in Kolluru, 1,050 hc. in Kollipara, 48 hc. in Repalle and 1,800 hc. in Bhattiprolu. About 50 per cent of paddy crop got affected in 20 hectares in Tenali, 4 hectares in Nizampatnam, 32 hc. in Cherukupalli, 20 hc. in Nagaram and 18 hectares in P.V. Palem.
