VIJAYAWADA: Heavy rains that lashed the district caused substantial damage to crops and paddy farmers suffered the maximum losses. Krishna district officials estimated the total loss under all crops at Rs. 22.25 crores. Paddy, which was in the harvesting stage, was badly damaged in Machilipatnam, Kaikaluru, Tiruvuru, Gudivada, Madavalli and other areas. The crop that was harvested and kept on sheaves was submerged due to rainwater. In some places, the crop was lodged and bent sideways under the impact of the gales. Officials said that there might be grain discolouration, which might reduce the market price of paddy this year. The farmers might suffer a loss of four to five bags yield an acre. The damage (in hectares) caused to paddy is 27,250, maize in 1,530, tobacco in 950, chillies in 3,050, turmeric in 50 and gingelly in 52. Maize was at various stages of harvesting when the heavy rains caused them to wet in the yards. This led to fungal development and decomposition. The market price would be affected as a result of this. Chilli crop was also affected badly in the rains.
