CHANDIGARH: Scientists at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal have succeeded in developing a platform test for detection of detergent in milk. This would help in checking adulteration of milk, the NDRI Director, Sushil Kumar, said in Karnal on Tuesday. Talking to media persons, Dr. Sushil Kumar, said that this testing technique and method developed in the Dairy Chemistry Division of the NDRI was simple, reproducible and sensitive to detect detergent in milk up to 0.0125% (12.5 mg/100 ml). He disclosed that detergents were believed to be one of the essential components of the so-called "Synthetic Milk". The latest technique had displayed significant improvement over the existing methods and would establish presence or absence of detergents in milk at dairy plant or milk collection centre level. He further added that this detection method does not require expensive reagents and results could be available in five to ten minutes. Dr.Sushil Kumar pointed out that this significant breakthrough was the result of continued research.
