CHENNAI: Whether it was the Mickey Mouse march or `We shall overcome... ' or A.M. Raja's super hit `Paatu padava... ', children of the Sangeet School of Music enjoyed themselves on stage. Performing at a function on the occasion of the school's third anniversary at the Music Academy on Monday, children as young as six years old presented a potpourri of popular numbers. "The guitar and keyboard are very versatile instruments. Please explore Indian forms of music in these instruments. It is important to be familiar with different kinds of music as each of them have their own beauty," said musician Sriram Parasuram. Lauding teachers, parents and the students on the effort, he urged them to set higher goals and work towards them. "Seeing them perform, I think some of them are potentially much more talented than what they give themselves credit for," he said. "See music not as a mere hobby and take creativity of the soul to higher levels," he added. Music director Ramesh Vinayagam and playback singer Anoorada Sriram gave away medals and certificates to the students of the school. At Sangeet, there are currently ninety 90 students. "We teach them to play the guitar and keyboard. We take students older than six years and some of our students are as old as thirty-five," said Vasanth Peter, who runs the school. "Although we train them primarily in Western Classical music, we are also looking at film music as people expect them to play film songs too," he said. The school is planning to come out with a musical this summer.
