Election Commission awaits panel of names

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Government has not yet submitted a panel of names to the Election Commission to enable it to pick a new Police Commissioner for Chennai. Commission sources in New Delhi said they had not received any message from the State administration till the 5 p.m. deadline set for the purpose.

Asked about the next course of action, the sources said the Commission would review the situation on Wednesday morning and take a decision in keeping with the guidelines laid down for such action. "We were expecting the State Government to respond positively to our request, but this has not happened as of Tuesday," a senior official said over telephone.
