GEARING UP: Americai V. Narayanan, Independent candidate distributes copies of his manifesto near the Gandhi statue on Tuesday.
CHENNAI: Americai V. Narayanan, Independent contestant in Mylapore, released his election manifesto near the Gandhi statue here on Tuesday. It promises to revive Mylapore's cultural heritage and introduce `school coupons' for poor children. The manifesto included proposals such as involving the public and NGOs in supervising the PDS, voice autorickshaw drivers' concerns in the Assembly, regulating traffic by constructing private and public parking lots, encouraging car pool, repairing Slum Clearance Board tenements that are in bad shape, spending MLA funds in a transparent manner, operating mobile geriatric care units (as there is a sizeable senior citizen population in the area) and involve noted senior persons in the area in decision making. "We will also revive Mylapore's cultural heritage by organising programmes such as concerts and story-telling sessions," said Mr. Narayanan. Besides these, he has come up with a `Taraga mandiram' for Tamil Nadu that speaks of the concept of food coupons. Ration food items should be made available in every shop. "The subsidy will be fixed and people can produce these coupons and buy at any shop. Similarly, school coupons should be introduced wherein children with these coupons can be admitted into any reputed school," he said. Mr. Narayanan circulated copies of his manifesto to unemployed youth, auto drivers, elderly people, slum dwellers and middle class residents near the Gandhi statue.
