Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: An extended dialysis unit costing Rs. 6.75 lakhs was commissioned at the Public Health Centre in West Mambalam on Saturday. C. Chinnaswami, senior urologist Vijaya Hospital dedicated the updated unit and said it will be a boon for "this part of Chennai with mainly a lower and poor class of people who cannot afford to meet the prohibitive treatment."

He complimented the centre for subsidising the cost of dialysis and urged the centre to propagate preventive aspects so that renal failure, a silent disease, can be minimised. He suggested that the centre set up a unit for kidney transplantation.

M.K. Srinivasan, president and medical director of the centre, and R. Venkataraman, nephrologists also spoke.
