CHENNAI:
In the last week, the City Police arrested about 1,700 criminals, who were stated to be absconding and against whom arrest warrants were pending.
A press release said the arrests were made with a view to conducting the Assembly elections peacefully and to reducing offences in the Chennai Metropolitan area.
In the last one-and-a-half months, 74 persons were detained under the Goondas Act, which included 25 rowdy elements, 39 property offenders, and four prohibition offenders, three under the Immoral Trafficking Act and two in pirated CD case.
Chennai Metropolitan Commissioner R. Nataraj had asked police officers to conduct vehicle checks and trace absconding offenders and those against whom arrest warrants were pending, the release added.
