Anganwadi workers stage protest

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers' Union have demanded inclusion of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) in the Human Resources Development Ministry.

At a demonstration followed by a public meeting here on Tuesday, union leaders said that ICDS was being implemented for three decades now only as a scheme. Promises of increasing the honorarium remained unfulfilled they said, demanding that ICDS be converted into a wing under the HRD Ministry. They also wanted anganwadi workers be classified as Class III and helpers as Class IV workers and attendant benefits given.

Participants included MP P. Madhu, MLA M.A. Gafoor, veteran CPI(M) leader Mallu Swarajyam, CITU secretary Y. Siddaiah, vice-president S. Punyavathi and union general secretary Roja.
