HYDERABAD: Schools for special children, that are now running independently in the city, could soon be brought under one roof in order to extend more facilities to students and also to secure more Government help. District Collector Arvind Kumar, after a visit to the Sri Vidhya's Centre for Special Children at Tukaram Gate here on Tuesday, said a meeting of such schools, which take care of children with Down's Syndrome, autism and various other genetic and mental disorders, would soon be convened to know the requirement of each school.
Land allocation
"The idea is to allocate land in the city, wherever it is available, so that these schools can have good residential facilities, adequate open space for the children and even a regular doctor. We are looking at whether we can bring three or four schools together, though they will be managed by their respective managements only," he said. Details of such schools in the city were being collected from the National Institute of Mentally Handicapped at Manovikasnagar in Secunderabad. The Sri Vidhya's Centre, in spite of rendering commendable service in the field, was finding it difficult to accommodate more children since it was functioning out of a small building now. Mr. Kumar, who interacted with parents, students and the management of the centre, said he was convinced that the centre was doing well but needed more space and help from the Government.
