Total prohibition from April 20 evening

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Total prohibition will be imposed in the six districts that go to the polls in the State on April 22, according to State Government officials.

Bar hotels and toddy shops will remain closed from April 20 evening to April 22 evening in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki.

The Excise Department said strict action, including cancellation of licence, would be taken against those who violate the prohibition orders. The department will also initiate action against the offenders under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Abkari, and Representation of People's Act.

As part of the pre-election enforcement drive, the Excise department has opened 24-hour control rooms in all taluks of the State. The department has also intensified checking of vehicles to prevent illicit smuggling of spirit and hooch.

Excise teams have conducted several raids on hooch distilling dens in the forest areas of the Thiruvananthapuram district. Drinking in public places and vehicles will be discouraged.

The Excise department will deploy plainclothesmen at various places to prevent public consumption, sale or distribution of liquor.

The sale of `zingiberries,' a veterinary preparation having a high spirit content, was being strictly monitored. The alcohol content in toddy sold through licensed outlets was being checked for the presence of spirit.
