Squad removes campaign material

Staff Reporter

9,620 posters and 180 banners removed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The election squad removed campaign materials put up in violation of the election code of conduct from different parts of the district on Tuesday.

According to District Collector N. Ayyappan, 9,620 posters, 180 banners and 140 boards were removed by the squad. This was in addition to the campaign materials removed by the squads deployed by the returning officers.

The squad headed by G.V. Hariharan Nair, junior superintendent at the Collectorate, toured all the 14 constituencies to monitor the campaigning. The squad found that the walls of Government offices and public sector undertakings had been used by political parties for campaigning. The squad removed all the posters, he said.

The squad removed posters and graffiti from the walls of the primary health centre and market at Kanyakulangara, bus shelter at Karakonam, post office at Parassala, Railway Mail Service and bus station at Thampanoor, water tank at Overbridge, waiting shed at Vembayam, traffic island, TV kiosk and market at Vellanad, bus stand and railway underpass at Varkala, railway bridge at Neyyattinkara, and the Higher Secondary schools at Njekkad and Venjaramood.

The squad reported that posters had been put up extensively on the notice boards of grama panchayats, municipalities and corporations. Such public boards should not be used for campaigning. In the wake of the report, Mr. Ayyappan directed the squad to crack down on those violating the rules.

Mr. Ayyappan said lamp and telephone posts and trees on `poramboke' land should not be used to string posters and bills. The squad removed boards and posters from such places too. Campaign materials should not be put up within the fixed limits of a polling booth.

The expenses incurred for removing the campaign materials will be realised from the candidates, Mr. Ayyappan said.
