NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra Government-run residential Ashram schools and non-residential Zilla Parishad schools lack qualified teachers and basic infrastructure in Dharni block, Amravati district. This was the finding of a team from New Delhi-based Social Jurist and Amravati-based Apeksha Society. TheDharni block is predominantly a tribal area comprising 85 per cent Scheduled Tribes and five per cent Scheduled Castes, with a literacy rate of 39.9 per cent. The team visited eight villages in Male Ghat. It found that Ashram schools, run by the State Tribal Department, had no buildings, and were run in rented rooms. The schools had no women teachers and were without toilets. Teachers were not available during working hours. There was not even drinking water. Children were denied basic amenities, including beds, soap, oil, plates, glasses, and a playground. Students were found to be suffering from skin diseases due to unhygienic surroundings. Medical facilities were also not made available. The teachers were employed on a temporary basis. The team says that there was a shortage of teachers in the ZP schools. Most of them were temporary or untrained, and paid salaries ranging from Rs. 600 to Rs. 800 a month. Teachers did not know Korku, the local language of Male Ghat. According to the report, the deplorable condition of these schools has resulted in thousands of children being denied the right to education.
