Alleged criminal killed

in encounter

NEW DELHI: A criminal allegedly involved in at least 50 cases of murder and robbery was killed in an encounter with the Special Cell of the Delhi police at New Usmanpur in North-East Delhi on Tuesday.

The Special Cell team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Yadav received a tip-off that Deepak Jat, involved in many criminal cases in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, would come to New Usmanpur on a motorcycle bearing a Haryana registration number.

Around 8-15 p.m., the police team spotted the motorcycle near the Pontoon Bridge and tried to intercept it, at which the rider, later identified as Deepak, whipped out a firearm and fired. In the retaliatory action, Deepak sustained bullet injuries. He was rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police recovered a 9 mm pistol from his possession.

Seven students

injured in accident

NEW DELHI: Seven students of Mount Holy School sustained injuries when the mini-bus that was ferrying them to school overturned at Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi on Tuesday. They were discharged after treatment.

The accident took place around 6-45 a.m. The victims -- Alka (10), Ashish Mehta (10), Annu (6), Nidhi (9), Jyoti (7), Sandeep (6) and Arti (6) -- were taken to Jagjivan Ram Hospital from where they were discharged after treatment.

`Sadhu'held under Wildlife Act

NEW DELHI: A 60-year-old man posing as a `sadhu' was arrested at Dilshad Garden in North-East Delhi on Monday for allegedly trying to sell wildlife items.

According to the police, Preetam Singh was arrested near the Dilshad Garden flyover. Two of his accomplices managed to flee. While a hunt has been launched for them, Preetam has been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act.

DU counselling

re-scheduled

NEW DELHI: Counselling for allotment of seats in Delhi University's postgraduate medical courses has been once again re-scheduled and will now begin May 5.

Slated to be held from April 19 to April 22, the counselling will now take place between May 5 and 8.

The dates have been changed due to the re-scheduling of the State and all-India quota counselling approved by the Supreme Court.

As per the new schedule, counselling of physically handicapped and SC/ST candidates will be held on May 5. While general candidates holding the ranks between 1 and 150 will be counselled on May 6, those between 101 and 300 on May 7 and those beyond rank 300 on May 8.

Palestine Club celebration

NEW DELHI: The valedictory celebration of Palestine Club was held at Bluebells School International here on Monday. The function, organised by the Social Science Department, started with a presentation on the geographical location, history and culture of Palestine. This was followed by a traditional dance performance by students and screening of the film "This is Palestine''. Set up in August last, the Club aims to create awareness and understanding of the Palestine people, their culture and history.
