This Day That Age
Marshal Nikolai Bulganin, the Soviet Prime Minister, and Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Communist Party chief, arrived in London on April 18 for a 10-day visit to Britain, during which they will have top-level talks on the world's major problems. The Soviet leaders, beginning later in the day the first of the six scheduled meetings with the British Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, are expected to offer a new Anglo-Soviet treaty of friendship to replace the one Moscow tore up last year after Britain had backed West German rearmament. Big trading concessions to Britain, the lifting of restrictions on contacts between the Russian and British people and a new fisheries agreement between the two countries are among other possible concessions. Welcoming the Soviet leaders at the Victoria Station, Sir Anthony Eden said that during their visit questions of interest to both countries would be discussed as well as those concerning world peace and prosperity. Stressing that it was the first time that Soviet leaders had visited Britain, he said, "I hope that by our work and decisions, we shall be able to improve relations between our countries and our peoples." In reply to Sir Anthony, Marshal Bulganin read out a prepared speech in Russian before the microphone in which he said: "In thanking Sir Anthony for his kind welcome, I convey the most cordial greetings of the Soviet people and Government as well as our own personal greetings to Her Majesty the Queen, and to the British Government and people."
