Dhaka under virtual siege

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: A series of clashes between police and Opposition activists over the 14-parties' sit-in programme in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka left a few hundred injured on Wednesday. Intercepted by police, the Opposition workers started fighting pitched battles with police in various areas here and damaged or burnt the ruling party leader's house and vehicles. The demonstrators came demanding credible elections. They also damaged dozens of cars and shops. Police in riot gear swung into action as the protesters assembled at the Bangla Motor crossing on their way to the Prime Minister's Office. Dozens of Awami League activists were reported injured in the police firing.
