The scuffle between supporters of the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid and journalists outside the Prime Minister's residence on Tuesday was unfortunate. The Imam should have asked his men to exercise restraint. But from what was shown on television he appeared to be encouraging them, which was unbecoming of a man of his stature.

Be it in the coverage of the tsunami or Mumbai rains, mediapersons add to the panic with their queries. The scuffle with the Imam's supporters was an extension of the attitude. The reporter persisted with the question and used impolite language when the Imam chose not to answer him. The media increasingly indulge in irresponsible journalism, which is a matter of concern.
