Advani asks TRS to quit UPA, table Bill on Telangana

Staff Reporter

BJP to support such a move if the Congress backtracks

ARMOOR: The former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani has said that if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre failed to introduce a Bill to amend the Constitution for the formation of a separate Telangana in the ensuing Parliament session, the BJP will support the TRS if it moves the Bill.

He, however, has hastened to add that his party will do so provided the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, which has gone to the polls in alliance with the Congress, quits the UPA Government and moves the Bill.

Mr. Advani, who has hitherto kept himself insisting on introduction of a Bill on statehood for Telangana by the UPA Government in Parliament, for the first time has come out saying that his party will not hesitate to support the TRS in moving the Bill if the Congress backtracks.

Addressing a roadside public meeting at Mamidipally Chowrasta in this town on Wednesday, he suggested to the Congress and TRS to decide themselves as to whether they should fulfil the promise made to Telangana people during elections or would like to betray them.

`Overwhelming response'

Claiming that his `Suraksha Yatra' evoked overwhelming response in the Congress-ruled States of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, he said he had launched the yatra to get to know the travails confronted by farmers and common people.

He reiterated that his party would demand constitution of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to study farmers' suicide cases across the country and submit a report to Parliament.

Mr. Advani, who entered the district at Biknoor at 12.20 p.m., earlier addressed a public meeting at Kamareddy. Later, he left for Nirmal. He spoke at the roadside meeting for only a few minutes from his chariot.
