Three Nagercoil students of Raja's Engineering College at Vadakkankulam have designed a safety device that can send alerts whenever cables are cut in windmills. Windmill operators can thus prevent theft of galvanised copper cables, widely used in wind turbines. Postgraduate electronics students Godwinson, Jeyakumar and Jenopaul say they are motivated to work on safety alarm device as more than 120 cable theft cases has been reported in and around Aralvoimozi areas in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. There are thousands of wind turbines in Aralvoimozi, Palavoor and Anjugramam. As most of the windmills are constructed in tower structure, long external cable is needed to connect wind turbine with transformer. A mesh of six to 15 cables is thus laid for generation of power from windmills and they are connected to the transformer.
