Bangalore: Fire services are an important and integral part of emergency services, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Basavaraj Horatti said here on Wednesday. He was speaking at a function organised as part of Fire Services Week 2006. He presented the Chief Minister's gold, silver and bronze medals to fire and emergency services personnel. "The medals have been given to deserving officials. I am sure that their families are very proud of them," he said. He said firemen were under tremendous stress and tension. "The officials of fire and emergency services have to be alert all the time," he added. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Horatti said there were over 2,000 vacancies in the Fire Services Department. Recruitment was pending for a long time. "I will request Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to take action in this regard. A meeting with senior officials of the department has been arranged in the second week of May, and I am confident that all problems being faced by the department will be solved," he said. He said the ban on recruitment did not apply to the Police, Health and Family Services and other departments providing essential services. R. Sreekumar, Director General of Police and Director of Fire Services, urged the Government to release funds for the Karnataka State Accelerated Fire and Emergency Services Improvement (K-SAFE) 2010 project. It was a five-year project for which Rs. 323.30 crore would be released. Mr. Sreekumar urged the Chief Minister to sanction recruitment to fill vacancies.
