Driver's heroism

saves lives

ELURU: An Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus driver, V. Pratapa Reddy (55), reportedly died of cardiac arrest on duty. Attached to Sattupalli Depot, Pratapa Reddy collapsed due to a stroke near Chodimella while driving back to Sattupalli from Eluru. Even as he suffered the stroke at fire station centre, he was said to have maintained his composure till he reached Chodimella for a distance of 3-4 km and collapsed on the steering wheel after taking the vehicle to the road margin. All the 25 passengers in the bus had a providential escape due to the exemplary service displayed by the driver. - Staff Reporter

Cloudburst in Kakinada

Kakinada: Kakinada experienced a cloudburst for over half-an-hour around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, disrupting normal life. Many of the roads came under knee-deep water and low-lying areas were submerged. The thundershower accompanied by heavy gales disrupted power supply. - Correspondent

Award for Belgian

HYDERABAD: Operational Director of Village Reconstruction Organisation (VRO) M.A. Windey has been conferred the first `Servant of the Poor' award by the Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI), a Delhi-based apex body of about 2000 NGOs of India. The award was given to 85-year-old Prof. Windey, a Belgian national, along with 11 other individuals and institutions, for his selfless service to the villagers of India during the past 60 years.

Girl drowned

KADAPA: A fourth standard student R. Lalitha Kumari (7) drowned in a well at Chitlur Harijanawada in Ramapuram mandal on Tuesday. She met with a watery grave when her feet got trapped in bushes when she went for a swim in the well along with two other girls. - Staff Reporter

New Director for NIN

HYDERABAD: B. Sesikeran, Deputy Director and head of the pathology division, is the new Director of the National Institute of Nutrition. He assumed charge on Tuesday. He was the coordinator of the pre-clinical toxicology unit at NIN. Dr. Sesikeran joined NIN in 1977 after obtaining his degree in medicine from Madras University. While carrying out diagnostic pathology, specifically in cancer diagnosis, he made significant contribution in the areas of nutrition pathology, diet, cancer, micronutrients, apoptosis and iron absorption from the gut. - Special Correspondent

Student commits suicide

Sangareddy: M. Satish a first year Intermediate student from Mittapalli village committed suicide following declaration of first year Intermediate results. According to the police, Satish was studying in Siddipet. He hanged himself after coming to know he had failed in the exam. - Staff Reporter

Rain brings

relief to grid

HYDERABAD: The two-day spell of heavy rain in the State has given relief to the power utilities by drastically bringing down the energy demand by almost all the categories of consumers. "The position is comfortable now," a senior official said on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

Temperatures fall

Hyderabad: Temperatures in the State fell further on Wednesday with the rain spell continuing. The highest day temperature of 37 degree C was recorded in Anantapur and Nandyal. There was isolated rain in coastal areas. The forecast for Thursday is isolated rain in all three regions.
