Bangalore: The women's wing of the Janata Dal (Secular) has demand greater number of women being fielded in the coming elections to the city corporations, city municipal councils and town panchayats. At a well-attended women's wing meeting held at the Janata Dal (S) headquarters here on Wednesday, the unanimous demand of the members was that the party should give an increased preference for women in the elections to the civic bodies. As such, women enjoy a 33 per cent reservation. The office-bearers of the women's wing led by the former Minister Leeladevi R. Prasad were keen on making their demands directly to the president of the Janata Dal (S) and national president H.D. Deve Gowda, who was scheduled to address the meeting.

The women felt let down when they were told that Mr. Deve Gowda would not be attending the meeting although all their demands would be given serious attention. M. Srinivas, former MP, said reservation for women for which Mr. Deve Gowda had been fighting all along should also be introduced in the Legislative Assemblies and in the Lok Sabha. The others who addressed the meeting were the former Ministers B.T. Lalitha Naik and B.N. Bacche Gowda and the party spokesman Y.S.V. Datta.
