CHAVAKKAD: In a major breakthrough, the police have arrested two persons who are alleged to be the key accused in the murder of Chavakkad Municipal Chairman and the CPI(M) leader K.P. Valsalan on Sunday last. The police gave the names of the arrested persons as Perumbilli Sulaiman (32) and Karyadath Veettil Faisal (33), both belonging to Ottayini, near Akalad, in Chavakkad area. Talking to reporters here, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy. SP) P.N. Unnirajan said the two accused were arrested on Wednesday from a house at Ottayini where they were hiding. Replying to questions, Mr. Unnirajan said both the accused claimed that they were supporters of the Indian National Congress. He, however, said investigations would be carried out to find out whether they have links with any other organisation. Asked about the allegations of involvement of three more persons in the crime, the Dy.SP said the police had registered a case against those three persons based on the complaint received from the supporters of the victim. But their involvement and role in the crime has not yet been established. The accused will be produced before the court on Thursday.
All-party meet
The district administration convened an all-party meeting at Chavakkad on Wednesday to review the law and order situation. Representatives of all the political parties and organisations who took part in the meeting expressed full support to initiatives to restore peace in the trouble-torn area. Setting the tone for the discussions, Sukumar Azhikode, social critic, said the worst form of political decadence was the practice of killing political rivals. District Collector Premachandra Kurup, Superintendent of Police M.N. Jayaprakash and Election Commission Observer Rauthar Davood Nazeem were among those who spoke on the occasion. The meeting constituted a peace-committee with the Guruvayur MLA P.K.K. Bava as the Chairman and the Collector as the Convener.
