6 more file papers for Rae Bareli by-election

LUCKNOW : Six more nomination papers were filed on Wednesday for the May 8 bye-election to Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, from where Congress President Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election, taking the number of those in the fray to 15.

According to Election Directorate sources here, five independents and one candidate belonging to a small party filed their papers on Wednesday.

Ms. Gandhi had filed her nomination papers on Monday and BJP nominee Vinay Katiyar was scheduled to file his papers on Thursday on the last day of filing of nominations.

Prabha Devi of the Apna Dal backed by expelled BJP leader Uma Bharti is also in the fray.

While scrutiny would be undertaken on April 21, last date for withdrawal of names in April 24, sources said adding, counting of votes would be taken up on May 11.

The by-election has been necessitated following the resignation of Ms.Gandhi over the office of profit controversy. PTI
