CHANDIGARH: It was a dream come true for 20 young boys and girls to find a shelter, equipped with all modern amenities and an assured bright future, in Navjeevan Children's Home in Sector 47 here which was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Punjab Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator, S.F. Rodrigues. This innovative project, jointly launched by Salesians Society and Navjeevan Trust with the active support of the Chandigarh Administration, envisages making the homeless children self-reliant by equipping them with quality academic education and vocational skills. Stressing the need for expanding the network of these humanitarian services, General Rodrigues reminded that the gurus, saints and sages had always emphasised to serve the needy. Also all religions emphasised love and compassion for children to ensure their growth as balanced individuals so that they could lead a life of honour and dignity. "We must extend them opportunities to excel in different fields of endeavour by identifying and developing their potential," he added. He pointed out that the Chandigarh Administration proposed to house 1,000 orphans/homeless children to help them in their empowerment by upgrading their skills and knowledge under the guidance of professionals and experts in different areas of human resource development. They would be provided good living conditions, quality education and all other opportunities, he added. The Chandigarh Administration had already asked the public and convent schools to ensure 15 per cent reservation to the economically backward students in their respective institutions. Jean Rodrigues, the wife of the Administrator, saw the facilities provided in the Home and interacted with the children.
