Freedom-fighter Latchanna dead

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Veteran freedom-fighter and champion of backward classes, Sardar Gouthu Latchanna, died here on Wednesday morning. He was 96 and is survived by son Shyama Sunder Sivaji, who is the TDP MLA from Sompeta, and two daughters. A diabetic, Mr. Latchanna had been ailing for some time and went into coma couple of days ago.

The body was taken to Sompeta where the last rites will be performed. He will be laid to rest beside the grave of his wife Yasoda Devi, who died in 1996, family sources said. Revenue Minister Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao will represent the State at the funeral, according to official sources in Hyderabad.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, APCC president K. Keshava Rao and leaders of other parties expressed grief at the demise of the socialist leader.

In a message, Dr. Reddy recalled Mr. Latchanna's crucial role in developmental activities, particularly in the north coastal districts. With his death the State had lost a veteran who believed in value-based politics. He stated that the late leader had championed the cause of backward classes, particularly toddy-tappers.
