COIMBATORE: Residents' Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) proposes to rope in a multinational consultancy firm to prepare a draft plan on development control regulations. The process will be finalised in 10 days, said G. Soundararajan, executive committee member of the Association. Building norms of the city were many decades old. "These regulations do not meet the requirements and evolving needs of present day Coimbatore," Mr. Soundararajan said. There was a need to create new development control regulations. The Association would appeal to the State Government to create Coimbatore Urban Development Authority on the lines of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The existing building norms of Coimbatore do not permit multi-storeyed car park and hence, even commercial complexes lacked good parking arrangements. Building regulations should be modified accordingly, he said. The Association had collected over 1.5 lakh signatures in support of its demands on multi-storeyed buildings and would totally collect two lakh signatures. These and the draft plan would be submitted to the Government. The city needed scheme roads, ring roads and multi-level flyovers at important junctions, he said. Further, the RAAC demanded division of the city into various zones and planning zone-wise developmental activities.
