Kerala elections

The editorial "Kerala headed Left, decisively" (April 20) rightly predicts the emergence of the Left Democratic Front as the frontrunner in the Assembly elections. The increased popularity of V.S. Achuthanandan and the squabbles in the UDF-DIC(K) combine will ensure the smooth sailing of the LDF. Even after making allowances for error in pre-election surveys, it is more or less certain that the LDF will win the elections.

C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
Kochi, Kerala

If the media and pre-poll surveys are to be believed, the LDF is all set to form the next government in Kerala. The UDF, under A.K. Antony and Oommen Chandy, pulled the State out of the morass it got into during the previous LDF rule. Major industrial groups were prepared to look at Kerala for some serious investment, thanks to the UDF's investor-friendly policies. The IT industry has been growing at a fast pace, providing jobs to thousands, and agriculture was finally getting its due share. All this will be reversed if the LDF comes to power, led by a person whose anti-development policies are well known.

P. Madhusudan,
Chennai
