This Day That Age
The Ceylon Premier, Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, will soon have consultations with Prime Minister Nehru on the question of declaring Ceylon a republic. At the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference in London in June, Ceylon will give top priority to this question and discussion at the official level will be initiated. Thereafter, Mr. Bandaranaike is expected to have private talks with Mr. Nehru on the issue. In an interview on April 20, Mr. Bandaranaike had confirmed that he would take early steps towards the establishment of a democratic republic and for that purpose the present Constitution would have to be amended. But he declined to comment when asked whether he proposed the republic of Ceylon to be within the Commonwealth or outside it.
