STREAMLINING TRAFFIC: Corporation and police officials conducting a survey in Hubli on Friday to identify parking lots and pedestrian crossings on roads.
HUBLI: Close on the heels of a decision taken in the coordination committee meeting for the twin cities development regarding streamlining vehicular movement, officials of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation and police conducted a joint survey of roads in Hubli on Friday to identify the areas for parking lots. G. Nagappa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), Traffic Inspector S.H. Gadad, Executive Engineer (north), HDMC, S.S. Phatke, launched the survey at around 11 a.m. and concluded around 3 p.m. The officials went round Koppikar Road, Maratha Galli, Broadway, Azad Road, Lamington Road, Station Road. Places for parking and pedestrian crossings were identified during the survey. A representative of "Automark" company, which would be taking up marking the lanes, accompanied them. Mr. Phatke said that it had been decided not to allow parking of vehicles on Lamington Road. Only places for making pedestrian crossing on the road were identified. However, the Corporation is contemplating converting the Lamington High School Ground as parking area for vehicles after 6 p.m., he said. Since construction of pavements is under way in Maratha Galli, it was decided to provide parking for four wheelers only on a section of the road, he said. Mr. Phatkesaid it has been planned to undertake marking of zebra crossings, parking lots and lane marking at important junctions and on busy roads with an approximate cost of Rs. 4.5 lakh. Marking of the lanes and parking lots will begin from Friday night. Mr. Phatke said the survey of important and busy roads in the city will continue on Saturday. The survey of Desai Circle, Keshwapur Road and nearby roads will be undertaken on Saturday.
