Corrections and clarifications

  • Some readers have pointed out a factual error in "Closer to final point on Siachen: Narayanan" and "India for `ironclad' guarantees" (April 21, 2006) — PTI reports on India and Pakistan presenting "various options or recommendations" on the Siachen issue. The references to the Saltoro Bridge (in the text) are incorrect, they say. It is the Saltoro Ridge, which originates from the Sia Kangri peak in the Karakoram range and where the altitudes range from 5,500 to 7,300 m (18,000 to 24,000 feet). The Siachen Glacier lies directly north of NJ 9842 (the last defined area under the 1972 Shimla accord), between the Saltoro Ridge (which is the AGPL or actual ground position line, as well as the watershed), to its west and the Karakoram Range to its east.

  • With reference to the interview with the vice-president of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki ("Maldivians want genuine democracy", April 19, 2006), about the naval ship gifted by India being used by Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to arrest dissidents in the Southern Atoll, New Delhi Special Correspondent Sandeep Dikshit writes: "Having come back from Male on April 17, I think his observations are factually incorrect. On that day, the ship was still in Male port and all the crucial positions were being manned by the Indian Navy's officers and men. It is also unlikely for it to travel to the Southern Atoll in one day (April 18), arrest the dissidents and transport them to the prison that is located on a remote island. This is part of an uninformed political debate in the Maldives involving Indian naval ships. And while interaction with people indicates that the President appears to be losing popularity, the fact is Indian Navy personnel are amused by the connotations being given to India's desire to help the Maldives protect its marine wealth from hostile trawlers from other countries as well as gun runners and pirates."

  • The report "Rape alleged" ("Briefly", April 20, 2006, page 1) mentioned page 10 in the early editions, but there were no details inside, says a reader. It was on how a Japanese woman has alleged that she was assaulted and robbed by a hotel manager in Pushkar, Rajasthan, recently.
